One of the most common questions we get before a family session is:
“What should we wear?”
And honestly, the good news is you do not need perfectly matching outfits or anything overly formal to create beautiful family portraits. The best family sessions happen when everyone feels comfortable, confident, and like themselves.
For outdoor family sessions in parks throughout San Diego and North County, we always recommend starting with soft, coordinating colors rather than exact matching outfits. Neutral tones, earth tones, soft blues, creams, tans, muted greens, and warm textures tend to photograph beautifully outdoors while keeping the focus on connection and personality.
The biggest thing to avoid is clothing that distracts from your family. Large logos, neon colors, overly busy patterns, or everyone wearing the exact same outfit can pull attention away from the emotion and natural interaction that make family portraits feel genuine.
Layers and texture photograph especially well in outdoor park sessions. Flowy dresses, sweaters, linen, denim, soft knits, and subtle patterns all add depth and movement to images without feeling overwhelming.
We also encourage families to bring along a few things you might naturally bring for an afternoon at the park — footballs, baseball gloves, frisbees, bubbles, fishing poles, or anything your family genuinely enjoys doing together. Some of the most meaningful images come from simply interacting naturally and sharing the activities you already love as a family. These little moments often create the most authentic smiles, laughter, and connection during your session.
Most importantly, choose outfits that allow everyone to relax and move comfortably. Family sessions are meant to feel playful, connected, and natural — especially with little ones involved. We want you focused on enjoying time together, not adjusting uncomfortable clothing the entire session.
At Shadowcatcher Imagery, our family sessions are designed to feel easygoing and pressure-free from start to finish. We’re always happy to help guide outfit choices before your session and can even help coordinate colors if you’re feeling stuck.
