Some sessions are fun.

And then there are the sessions that remind me exactly why I love doing this.

This martial arts photography session was one of those.

Recently, I photographed an 11-year-old black belt for a Taekwondo portrait session, and from the very beginning, I knew we were going to create something special. He brought the focus, the skill and the confidence, and I got to do what I love most—take all of that energy and turn it into images that feel powerful, dramatic and full of personality.

More Than a Traditional Portrait Session

When people think of kids’ portraits, they usually picture smiling at the camera and standing nicely.

That is not what this was.

This session was about capturing movement, strength, discipline and presence. We created a variety of images, from strong traditional martial arts poses to action-based portraits that really showed what he can do.

Some of the images feel bold and intense. Some feel dramatic and cinematic. Some have a classic black-and-white look. And some go all in on the creative side.

That mix is one of the things I loved most about this session.

As a professional photographer with more than 20 years of experience, I still get excited when I get to create something that feels different. I have photographed so many kinds of people and sessions over the years, but this one gave me so much room to play, experiment and create.

And it was an absolute blast.

The Special Effects Were So Much Fun to Create

One of the biggest highlights of this Taekwondo session was getting to add the special effects.

I love creating clean, strong portraits first, because the image has to stand on its own before anything extra is added. But once that foundation is there, the creative possibilities open up in such a fun way.

That is where the session really came alive.

We created portraits with fire effects, bold dramatic backgrounds, a punch image with extra impact, a cool blue-toned action scene, and other stylized images that gave the final gallery a much more exciting and cinematic feel.

There is something so fun about taking a great portrait and then pushing it one step further into something that looks larger than life.

That creative side of my work is something I truly love.

If you are looking for a special effects photographer, this is exactly the kind of thing that gets me excited—taking a strong portrait and building something around it that feels unique, imaginative and full of energy.

Not every image needs the effects.

But having a few of them mixed into the gallery makes the whole session feel even more memorable.

Why Martial Arts Sessions Work So Well

Martial arts portraits are not just about the uniform.

They are about everything that uniform represents.

The years of practice. The classes. The testing. The mistakes. The discipline. The determination. The confidence that builds over time.

That is what I want to photograph.

This session was about more than simply documenting what he looked like at this age. It was about creating images that showed what he had already accomplished.

Not just:

"Here I am in my uniform."

But:

"This is who I was at this moment. This is what I could do. This is what I worked for."

That is what makes these portraits meaningful.

Taekwondo Photography with Personality

This particular session was a Taekwondo photography session, and I loved how much variety we were able to create.

We photographed strong weapon poses, action poses, sparring gear portraits, a dramatic close-up punch, and a series of special effects images that gave the session a really exciting edge.

Each image had its own feel, but together they told a bigger story about strength, focus and personality.

That is one of my favorite things about this kind of work.

No two martial arts sessions have to look the same.

Every athlete brings something different, and every session can be built around that. While this one featured Taekwondo, this style of session can work beautifully for karate, kung fu, jiu-jitsu, kickboxing and other martial arts as well.

Why I Loved Creating This Session

For me, this session was the perfect combination of everything I love about being a photographer.

It had creativity.

It had action.

It had personality.

It had strong portraiture.

And it had those fun special effects that let me stretch even further and create something really memorable.

I love being able to offer both the polished portrait side and the imaginative, more dramatic side. And when a client is excited to lean into that and create something bold, it makes the experience even better.

This one was just plain fun from start to finish.

And looking at the full set of images—from the strong classic portraits to the dramatic special effects pieces—I feel like we created something that really celebrates both the athlete and the art.

This is exactly the kind of creative session that keeps me excited about what I do.
